What the PLC Actually Controls on a Water Filling Line

A quote that says “Siemens / Mitsubishi PLC” is not a specification. On water filling machinery, the controller keeps bottles, valves, and caps on the same clock. If that clock slips, you get wet floors, cocked caps, and a water filler machine that looks fast on paper and slow on the shift report.

This is what sits behind the HMI on a water filling machine—not a brochure of logo badges.

How the loop actually runs (one bottle)

Think of one PET bottle, not the whole hall. A sensor sees the neck. The PLC either opens a valve or skips that station. After fill, the same clock drops a cap and checks torque. That is a water filling and capping machine in one frame—not three separate brains arguing.

Five loops that matter on still water

  • Infeed permission — no bottle, no fill. Starwheel and neck sensors tell the turret to skip a valve instead of dumping water on the deck.
  • Valve time / volume — gravity or flowmeter fill on PET water is usually time- or pulse-based. The PLC holds the recipe for 500 ml vs 1.5 L.
  • Cap pick and torque — chuck down, cap present, torque window. A “good” cap the PLC never checked is how leak complaints start two weeks after startup.
  • Conveyor handshake — filler speed follows the labeler and packer, or you get an island of bottles. That is the difference between a monoblock and a water bottling line.
  • CIP / rinse recipes — spray, drain, and “do not fill until rinse complete.”

How a water bottling line stays in sync

A water bottling machine on a plant email usually means more than the filler: treatment, unscrambler or blowing, the filler, labeling, shrink wrap. The PLC on the filler only owns its turret unless we expose handshake bits. Layout and buffers live on the bottling plant page; here is the clock.

What to send in the first email

An automatic water filling machine is not automatically a good PLC

An automatic water filling machine can still be a dumb sequencer: infeed runs, a screen lights up, nobody stored a recipe. A useful panel stores 500 ml vs 1.5 L, shows why the line stopped (cap hopper empty vs downstream jam), and lets a technician lock one valve. If you only need a single liquid filling machine cell, say so—we will not sell a plant SCADA story.

When PLC talk is a waste of time

Juice with pulp, hot-fill, or carbonated drinks change the valve first; the controller follows. Do not start with brand names. Start with the bottle and the drink. Still water in PET is the simple case—and even then, most delays we see are change-parts and handshake, not the CPU.

FAQ

What does a PLC do on a water filling machine?

It clocks sensors, fill valves, and capping, and it can hold the filler when the next machine jams. It does not treat the water or apply the label unless those skids are wired into the same handshake.

Is CIP part of the filler PLC?

On most Beyond water monoblocks, CIP recipes (spray time, drain, “ready to fill”) live in the same cabinet. Plant-level CIP for treatment tanks is a separate skid—say so in the first email.

Do I need the same PLC brand as my old line?

Only if your electrician and spare stock already lock you in. We can match Siemens / Mitsubishi / others when you name the brand. The loops above do not change.

What files get a useful quote?

Bottle drawing, target BPH, SKU list, and which blocks you already own. “PLC included” without those four is not a spec.
